A city with a local centre

Chelmsford is a city in Essex with a centre that can be explored on foot, from the station and cathedral quarter towards the High Street and the riverside. Shopping, places to eat and everyday services sit alongside spaces where you can pause away from the traffic.

This directory brings together businesses and community life across the city and nearby settlements. The area filter includes city neighbourhoods such as Great Baddow, Springfield and Chelmer Village as well as villages including Writtle, Boreham and Danbury. Choose the area where you need a service, or search across the directory.

The cathedral and the older city

Chelmsford Cathedral is a useful starting point for a visit to the centre. The churchyard offers a different pace from the nearby shopping streets, while the cathedral itself is a working place of worship with its own programme of music and events.

For a first visit, combine the cathedral quarter with a walk along the High Street and towards Moulsham Street. Check the cathedral’s visitor information before travelling for a particular service or event.

Local stories at Oaklands

The Museum of Chelmsford is in Oaklands Park. Its collections explore the people, natural history and discoveries associated with the area, giving a visit more context than a list of shops alone.

Use the museum’s current programme to plan a visit, then leave time for the surrounding park. Booking arrangements and access information belong on the venue’s own website rather than an out-of-date copied timetable.

Neighbourhoods and villages

Writtle has a village green and pond, while Great Baddow, Broomfield and Galleywood have their own community identities close to the city. Further out, Danbury, Little Baddow, the Walthams and Stock offer different starting points for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Our coverage also includes Sandon and South Woodham Ferrers. These are directory search areas, not a claim that every place is within the same parish or shares the same services. Check a business’s address and stated service area before arranging a visit.

Getting around and planning a visit

Chelmsford station is a useful arrival point for the city centre. Beaulieu Park station serves the north of the city, including the Beaulieu and Channels area. Choose the station that suits your destination, and plan the return trip as well as the outward route when using local buses.

Use current operator information for rail services and the council’s travel and parking pages for local arrangements. Opening times, parking terms and accessible entrances should be checked with the place you are visiting.
